Several years ago, we were ‘treated’ to some real, naturally reared, traditional, free range pork. We had never had it before, having always bought all our meat from the large stores along with the vast majority of other people, without ever looking at the labels or caring how the animals were reared.
The difference was amazing! The firm, juicy, tender and additive free meat was not at all a comparison with the pale, watery and full of chemicals stuff sold by the big supermarkets. After this we made the decision that, whenever possible, we would always try and afford the little extra to buy quality, free range meat for our family. As an added bonus, by buying the better quality free range meat, we were also (in a little way) raising our voices against the ever growing factory systems of producing meat.
We have now gone even further and are in a position to raise and sell our own free range pork direct to the public. If, as we believe there is, a continued demand for top quality, locally produced, high welfare meat, we will look at supporting other local producers by offering their products for sale alongside our own. Every penny taken away from the pockets of the big supermarkets and factory farmers should make all of us a little happier.
